From Bluebirds to Mallards. There are babies all around. Momma Blue's eggs are due to hatch this week. Hopefully, she will have better luck the second time around. In the mean time, Momma Mallard laid seven eggs under a sago palm in our front yard. On the 28th day little cracks started to appear. By the next day there were seven tiny, fluffy babies. Later that day they were out on the pond. WARNING - this is a cruel pond. Sadly, the mortality rate is high. Unfortunately, ducks are not equipped with any defenses. So, as of today there are only four babies left. Maybe they will make it.

Bluebird update #3.
Baby left the house last night at 8:00 p.m after spending 2 hours getting up his nerve. He flew out of the box and landed under the maple tree. He managed to fly up to a branch and park there over night. At lunchtime today he was gone. We haven't seen him since. I don't know where he went, but his parents are here looking in the box. Where's baby?

Bluebird update #2.
Unfortunately only one bird successfully hatched from the five. One started to hatch, but I found it later dead, unable to completely hatch. I removed the four eggs. So we have one baby to watch this time around. Take a look at the pictures.

Bluebird update.
The birds laid 5 eggs between 4/1/05 & 4/6/05 (one a day). The eggs should hatch in 12 to 14 days. Today is the 14th day. We will have to wait and watch.

This is the 4th year the bluebirds have returned to the house. Last year the birds laid eggs 4 different times and only had success with the last batch. 3 birds left the nest at the end of 43 days..

Welcome to my new website. This site was made possible by Mark Thompson - programmer extraordinaire.

The purpose of this website is to communicate with words and pictures to my friends and family. As you can see most of my pictures focus on nature, mostly birds in particular. There is a large variety of birds in our area. Because we live on a pond, not only do we get song birds, but also wading birds such as egrets and herons. I also put up a bluebird box several years ago and have had nesting birds for the past three years. They are back and hopefully will begin building their nest soon. I will keep you up to date.

In the future I will also be including pictures of our home and landscaping and various other things around Jacksonville, FL.
